Josefa Salgado, appointed dean of the Faculty of Physics at the USC

The professor and secretary of our institute, Josefa Salgado Carballo, assumes the position of dean of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela after being elected in the last vote by the faculty’s faculty. Salgado replaces Elena López Lago, also a researcher at iMATUS, in the position, thus beginning a six-year period at the head of a dean’s team that will be made up of Silvia Barbosa Fernández and Xesús Prieto Blanco, as vice-deans, and Héctor Álvarez Pol, as secretary.

A project focused on modernization and talent. During her presentation, the new dean outlined a roadmap for the next six years based on strategic axes such as the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Faculty of Physics building. Salgado stressed that it is “essential” to guarantee modern and versatile spaces that are fully adapted to the current and future needs of the university community.

Another of the fundamental pillars of her proposal is the recruitment and retention of student talent. The new dean advocates for strengthening actions aimed at guaranteeing inclusive and high-quality training. In this sense, she has set as one of the most immediate challenges the integration of artificial intelligence in the teaching environment, betting not only on the adoption of advanced digital tools, but also on the critical training of students in their use, thus facilitating skills that will be decisive in their future academic and professional careers.

Likewise, Professor Salgado has set as a priority objective to strengthen the connection of the Faculty of Physics with the different research institutes —including iMATUS—, as well as to strengthen the relationship with the business community and those companies with the capacity to absorb the high potential of the talent generated in the classrooms. Finally, the professor has committed to moving towards an agile management model, which is based on transparency, constant dialogue and the participation of all groups to build a solid project.

From iMATUS we would like to convey to Professor Salgado our congratulations for this well-deserved appointment, wishing her much success in carrying out this new responsibility in the Faculty of Physics.
