Álvaro Goyanes, professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and a member of the USC Materials Institute (iMATUS), has achieved remarkable international recognition by being the only USC researcher included in the “Highly Cited Researchers 2025” list. This prestigious list, compiled annually by the Web of Science group, recognizes researchers whose publications have demonstrated a significant influence over the past decade, placing them among the top 1% of most cited articles in their respective fields.
The 2025 edition of “Highly Cited Researchers” analyzed articles published and cited between 2014 and 2024, registering a total of 6,868 individuals from 60 countries or regions.
Pioneer in 3D Printing of Medicines
Affiliated with the Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Technology, Álvaro Goyanes’s scientific activity focuses on the innovative field of 3D printing of medicines with personalized doses.
His pioneering work has led him to co-found two leading companies:
- FABRX: The first startup dedicated to 3D printing of personalized medicines, which he co-founded and where he served as CEO.
- FABRX Artificial Intelligence: A Galician company focused on using artificial intelligence for the development of new drugs.
With a scientific output of approximately one hundred published articles and more than 200 presentations at international conferences, Goyanes is considered a world expert in this type of printing. He was one of the first researchers to explore the potential of 3D printing for the manufacture of oral pharmaceutical dosage forms using advanced technologies.
