Project from iMATUS and IDIS awarded by the Mutua Madrileña Foundation for skin regeneration using 4D bioprinting

The project “Programmable autologous skin for functional wound regeneration” led by researchers from the Institute of Materials (iMATUS) of the USC, has been selected in the XXIII edition of the Medical Research Grants from the Mutua Madrileña Foundation. This scientific initiative will be developed thanks to a close collaboration between the iMATUS team and two other groups from the Health Research Institute of Santiago (IDIS).

The iMATUS team leading this research is composed of Luis A. Díaz Gómez (principal investigator), Patricia Díaz Rodríguez, Bárbara Blanco Fernández, Ángel Concheiro, and Carmen Álvarez Lorenzo, director of iMATUS.

The central objective of this research is the development of personalized intelligent skin using the patient’s own cells, utilizing advanced 4D bioprinting techniques. The technology aims to create living tissues capable of self-organizing, facilitating efficient vascular and structural regeneration in severe lesions, such as burns or wounds derived from oncological surgeries.

“This new technology aims to reduce recovery times, minimize the risk of infections and fibrosis, and improve the patients’ quality of life, facilitating their social and professional reintegration,” highlights Luis A. Díaz Gómez.
